Signs Your Switchgear Needs Inspection or Replacement

Switchgear is one of the most critical components of any industrial electrical system. It protects equipment, controls the flow of electricity, and helps keep facilities operating safely and efficiently. However, like any electrical equipment, switchgear experiences wear over time. Ignoring early warning signs can lead to costly downtime, equipment failure, or serious safety hazards.

At J&P Electrical Company, we help businesses procure new, used, or refurbished industrial electrical equipment to keep operations running efficiently. Knowing when your switchgear requires careful inspection or replacement can help prevent unexpected outages and expensive repairs. Here are some common red flags to watch for:

Recognizing Switchgear Problems

Frequent Circuit Breaker Trips -Circuit breakers are designed to protect your electrical system from overloads and faults. If breakers are tripping more frequently than normal, it could indicate worn components, deteriorating insulation, overloaded circuits, or a developing electrical fault. Repeated nuisance trips should never be ignored.

Visible Damage or Corrosion -Moisture, dirt, and corrosion can significantly reduce switchgear reliability and increase the risk of equipment failure. Routine visual inspections may reveal warning signs such as:

  • Rust or corrosion
  • Burn marks
  • Cracked insulation
  • Water intrusion
  • Loose or damaged components

Unusual Sounds or Odors - Buzzing, humming, popping, or crackling noises often indicate loose electrical connections or internal arcing. Likewise, a burning smell or the odor of overheated insulation may signal excessive heat or failing components. These symptoms should be evaluated immediately by qualified professionals.

Aging Equipment -Many industrial facilities continue to operate switchgear that has been in service for decades. While properly maintained equipment can have a long lifespan, aging systems become increasingly difficult to service as replacement parts become obsolete. If your switchgear is 20 to 30 years old or older, it may be time to evaluate whether refurbishment or replacement is the best long-term solution.

Increased Downtime -Unexpected equipment failures can disrupt production schedules, delay projects, and increase maintenance costs. If electrical issues are becoming more frequent, your switchgear may no longer be performing reliably. A proactive inspection can often identify developing problems before they result in costly outages.

Challenges Sourcing Older Switchgear Parts

Many manufacturers discontinue older switchgear models, making replacement components difficult to obtain. Rather than waiting for an emergency, consider working with an experienced supplier that specializes in sourcing older versions and hard-to-find electrical equipment. J&P Electrical Company maintains extensive inventory and procurement resources to help customers locate replacement breakers, switchgear, transformers, and other industrial electrical components.

Is Your Switchgear Keeping Up with Business Growth?

Business growth often places additional demands on existing electrical systems. New production equipment, automation, HVAC upgrades, and facility expansions can exceed the capacity of older switchgear. An electrical assessment can determine whether your current system can safely support your operational needs.

Why Regular Switchgear Inspections Matter

Regular inspections help identify issues before they become major problems. Preventive maintenance is almost always less expensive than emergency repairs or unexpected production shutdowns. Benefits include:

  • Improved workplace safety
  • Reduced equipment downtime
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Increased equipment reliability
  • Extended service life

Bus Duct Systems: Choosing the Right Conductor and Understanding Key Applications

When it comes to bus duct systems, one of the most important decisions is the choice of conductor material. The two primary options, copper and aluminum, each offer distinct advantages depending on the application, performance needs, and budget.

Copper vs. Aluminum Conductors

Copper is widely recognized for its superior electrical conductivity, durability, and thermal performance. It carries higher current with less resistance, making it ideal for demanding environments such as industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and power generation systems where reliability is critical.

Aluminum, while not as conductive as copper, provides a more cost-effective and lightweight alternative. Advances in aluminum alloys have improved its performance, making it a practical choice for residential buildings, smaller commercial projects, and applications where reducing cost and weight is a priority.

In general, copper is preferred for high-performance, high-demand systems, while aluminum is selected when budget and installation efficiency are key considerations. Regional trends also reflect this balance; developed markets tend to favor copper for its reliability, while cost-sensitive regions often opt for aluminum.

Where Bus Duct Systems Are Used

Bus ducts are essential across a wide range of industries due to their efficiency, flexibility, and safety compared to traditional wiring.

  • Industrial Applications: Manufacturing plants and heavy industries rely on bus ducts for high-capacity, durable power distribution in demanding conditions.
  • Commercial Buildings: Offices, hospitals, shopping centers, and high-rise developments benefit from faster installation, adaptable layouts, and improved safety.
  • Residential Projects: Modern apartments and large housing developments are increasingly using bus ducts for reliable and efficient power distribution.
  • Utilities & Energy Sector: Power plants, substations, and renewable energy systems depend on bus ducts for high-capacity, low-maintenance electrical distribution.

Selecting the right bus duct system comes down to balancing performance, cost, and application needs. Copper offers maximum efficiency and reliability, while aluminum provides a practical, budget-friendly solution. As infrastructure continues to grow and modernize, bus ducts remain a key component in delivering safe and efficient power across all sectors.

What Are PCBs?

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of synthetic organic chemicals that were widely used in electrical and industrial applications for decades. Commonly found in transformers, capacitors, heat transfer systems, rail cars, and certain coatings, PCBs were valued for their stability, low flammability, and ability to effectively insulate and maintain electrical currents.

While these properties made PCBs highly useful, they also present serious environmental and health concerns. PCBs do not break down easily and can persist in the environment for long periods. Over time, exposure has been linked to a range of health risks, making their proper management critical.

PCBs were banned in the U.S. in 1979 under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Although production stopped, EPA regulations still allow small amounts to be unintentionally created during certain manufacturing processes. These inadvertently generated PCBs (iPCBs) are only permitted at specific concentration levels and must meet strict conditions, including reporting to the EPA and maintaining proper records.

In demolition and asset recovery projects, identifying and handling PCB-containing equipment is an essential step. This includes safely removing PCB oils, fluids, and contaminated components in accordance with strict environmental regulations. Proper disposal not only protects workers and surrounding communities but also ensures compliance with federal and state guidelines.

At J&P Electrical, our team is experienced in managing PCB-related materials during electrical teardowns and plant cleanouts. We prioritize safety, environmental responsibility, and regulatory compliance on every project—helping clients navigate complex requirements while minimizing risk.

Demolition vs. Deconstruction: Understanding the Key Differences

While both demolition and deconstruction can achieve high material recovery rates, often reclaiming up to 90% of materials, the primary difference lies in the methods used to remove those materials.

Deconstruction is a labor-intensive process that focuses on carefully dismantling a structure by hand. Building components are removed piece by piece to preserve materials for reuse or recycling. Because it relies heavily on skilled manual labor, deconstruction typically takes more time but allows for greater material preservation.

Traditional demolition, on the other hand, uses heavy machinery, specialized attachments, and advanced technology to quickly take down structures. This method prioritizes speed and efficiency while still supporting strong recycling outcomes through modern material-sorting and recovery equipment. Although the approaches differ, both demolition and deconstruction share the same goal: maximizing the recovery of valuable and recyclable materials from the job site.

How J&P Electrical Handles Electrical Asset Recovery

Electrical asset recovery is the process of safely removing, evaluating, and repurposing or recycling electrical equipment during demolition, renovation, or facility decommissioning projects. This practice helps reduce waste, recover valuable materials, and lower disposal costs.

At J&P Electrical, our asset recovery division specializes in complete electrical tear-downs and plant cleanouts. We work alongside respected companies such as Adamo, Bierlein, and Brandenburg, maintaining the highest safety standards on every project. Our teams are highly trained, fully insured, experienced, and professional, ensuring each job is completed efficiently and safely. By recovering materials directly at the source, we eliminate the middleman. This streamlined approach allows us to offer highly competitive pricing while maximizing value for our clients.

Electrical Asset Recovery Services Include:

  • Disconnecting and dismantling electrical systems such as switchgear, panels, transformers, cables, motors, and wiring
  • Identifying components that can be reused or resold
  • Recovering high-value materials like copper, aluminum, and steel
  • Recycling non-reusable assets in compliance with environmental regulations

This process supports sustainability initiatives while maximizing the financial return from retired electrical assets.

Demolition: A Highly Regulated Industry

Demolition is one of the most regulated sectors in construction. Because contractors often work on structurally compromised buildings, most projects require permits and oversight from local authorities. The presence of hazardous materials also requires strict compliance with environmental regulations at the municipal, state, and federal levels. Due to the risks involved, demolition is governed by rigorous safety standards, including OSHA’s Construction Standard (29 CFR 1926), to ensure work is performed safely and responsibly.

Request a bid from J&P Electrical for your complete electrical asset recovery project and trust our team to complete the work safely, efficiently, and professionally.

Michigan’s Rising Energy Demand: What It Means for Industry, Infrastructure, and Electrical Supply

Michigan’s energy landscape is undergoing significant change. According to the Michigan Public Service Commission’s (MPSC) Winter Energy Appraisal for 2025–2026, demand for both electricity and natural gas is expected to rise, adding pressure to infrastructure, pricing, and long-term planning across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

Growing Demand, Adequate Supply

The MPSC projects electricity demand to increase 2.9% in 2025, reaching approximately 100.46 terawatt-hours, up from 98.8 TWh in 2024. Residential demand leads the increase at 5.8%, followed by commercial growth of 3.2%, while industrial demand is expected to dip slightly by 0.6%.

Natural gas usage is also forecast to rise 3.3% overall, driven by strong growth in:

  • Commercial demand: +14.4%
  • Residential demand: +13.9%
  • Industrial demand: +12.1%

At the same time, natural gas used for electric generation is expected to decline 10.8%, reflecting continued shifts in generation strategies.

Despite rising demand, the appraisal indicates no anticipated supply shortages. Independent system operators serving Michigan, along with the state’s capacity demonstration process, confirm that sufficient generation and transmission capacity is available to meet projected needs.

Energy Prices Continue to Climb

While supply remains stable, costs are trending upward. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts average residential electricity prices in the East North Central region to reach 17.57 cents per kWh in 2025, a 6.3% increase year over year. Actual prices in Michigan will continue to vary by utility.

Fuel costs show mixed movement:

  • Residential propane averaged $2.16 per gallon in October 2025, unchanged from 2024.
  • No. 2 heating oil began the season at $3.13 per gallon, up slightly year over year.
  • Midwest gasoline prices are expected to average $2.96 per gallon in 2025 before dropping to $2.65 in 2026, with gasoline demand declining modestly.

Utility Rate Hikes Add Pressure

In March 2025, the MPSC approved a $154 million electric rate increase for Consumers Energy. Although the approved amount was significantly lower than the utility’s original $325 million request, it follows another rate hike approved just a year earlier. These recurring increases underscore the growing cost burden on Michigan ratepayers, even as energy demand continues to rise.

The Impact of AI and Data Centers

A major driver behind increasing electricity demand nationwide is the rapid expansion of AI-driven data centers. Investment in data center infrastructure now exceeds what the U.S. spent to build the entire interstate highway system (inflation-adjusted). These facilities require massive, continuous power loads, placing additional strain on regional grids.

As utilities invest heavily in new generation, transmission, and grid upgrades to support this growth, costs are often passed on to customers—contributing to higher electric bills for residential and commercial users alike.

What This Means for Industrial Operations

For manufacturers, utilities, and large-scale facilities, these trends highlight the importance of:

  • Reliable, scalable electrical infrastructure
  • Efficient power distribution equipment
  • Forward-looking planning to accommodate load growth and rate volatility

At J&P Electrical Company, we support industrial customers navigating this evolving energy environment by supplying large-scale, high-quality electrical equipment designed to meet increasing demand while maintaining reliability and compliance. As Michigan’s energy needs continue to grow, having the right electrical infrastructure in place will be more critical than ever.

Bus Duct Solutions: Air-Insulated and Sandwich-Insulated Options

J&P Electrical supplies a wide range of new, used, and refurbished electrical products, including comprehensive bus duct systems designed for industrial, commercial, and large-scale infrastructure projects. Two of the most common insulation types, air-insulated and sandwich-insulated, offer distinct advantages depending on budget, space, and performance requirements.

Air-Insulated Bus Duct

Air-insulated bus duct uses air as the insulating medium between conductors. It remains a cost-effective choice for facilities where budget is a primary factor and ample physical space is available. Because this style requires more clearance and a larger installation footprint, it’s typically selected for applications with minimal space constraints.

Sandwich-Insulated Bus Duct

Sandwich-insulated bus duct relies on solid insulating materials such as epoxy or polyester to isolate the conductors. This design delivers stronger protection against environmental exposure and reduces the likelihood of electrical faults. Its compact, durable construction makes it ideal for high-rise buildings, industrial environments, and commercial complexes—anywhere space optimization and enhanced safety are essential.

How to Choose the Best Bus Duct for Your Project

Project-specific requirements ultimately determine the best choice:

• When space is limited, sandwich-insulated systems are often the preferred solution.
• When cost sensitivity is a primary factor, and there is room for larger equipment, air-insulated designs may be more practical.

Advances in insulation technologies continue to shape the bus duct market. Improved materials with enhanced thermal and electrical properties drive demand for higher-performance systems, particularly in projects that prioritize reliability, safety, and long-term efficiency.

J&P Electrical supports these needs by providing a full inventory of bus duct products and components—new, used, and expertly refurbished—ensuring customers receive dependable solutions tailored to their application.

Bus Duct Types: Segregated, Non-Segregated, & Isolated Phase

Bus duct is essential for safely distributing electrical power in industrial and commercial settings. They come in three main types—segregated, non-segregated, and isolated phase—each designed for specific performance and safety needs.

Segregated Phase Bus Ducts

These systems keep each electrical phase separated by barriers to prevent faults and improve safety. They’re commonly used in power plants and large industrial sites where reliability is critical.

Non-Segregated Phase Bus Ducts

In this type, all phases share a common enclosure without barriers. They are less expensive and easier to install, making them ideal for commercial buildings and smaller industrial applications where fault risk is low and budgets are tighter.

Isolated Phase Bus Ducts

Each phase is completely enclosed in its own grounded housing, offering the highest level of protection and reliability. These are typically used in high-capacity generation facilities and critical infrastructure where downtime is unacceptable.

At J&P Electrical, our team specializes in refurbishing all types of bus duct systems, saving your company significant costs compared to purchasing new. Understanding Substations: Key Components of Power Distribution

At J&P Electrical, we provide a wide range of electrical products and services—including new surplus, used, and refurbished heavy-industrial electrical components. Substations and power distribution equipment are among the critical systems we work with every day, helping facilities maintain reliable, efficient operations.

What Are Substations?

In industrial settings, a substation is a collection of devices working together to convert main distribution power into usable power for a facility. These systems often include transformers, lightning arrestors, capacitor banks, voltage regulators, switches, and fuses. Together, these components ensure consistent, high-quality power while protecting against outages.

Substations are commonly seen fenced near power lines or positioned at manufacturing facilities where large amounts of power are required.

What Are Unit Substations?

A unit substation takes incoming utility service and converts it to match a facility’s operating needs. This setup integrates three sections into one physical unit:

  • Medium-voltage section – Includes switches, fused switches, or breakers (typically 4kV–20kV) to protect and distribute power.
  • Transformer section – Reduces the medium voltage to a lower voltage, with primary/secondary connections, monitoring equipment, and sometimes cooling fans.
  • Low-voltage section – Contains a main breaker and distribution breakers, delivering power directly to plant equipment or breaker panels. Common voltages here are 480V in modern facilities and 600V in older plants.

Alternatives: Pad-Mount Transformers

For smaller or mid-sized facilities, an alternative to a unit substation is a pad-mount transformer. These are utility-owned and maintained, typically mounted outside the facility. They provide the necessary voltage directly, while the facility is responsible for the cables leading into its low-voltage distribution gear.

The distribution gear functions similarly to the low-voltage section of a unit substation, housing the main utility protection and distributing power to machines and panels through breakers or disconnects.

Choosing Between a Unit Substation and Pad-Mount Transformer

The right choice depends on a facility’s requirements, future growth plans, and available resources. Both systems offer distinct advantages:

Unit Substation Advantages:

  • Greater facility control over operation.
  • Power sizing is determined by the substation, not utility limits.
  • High-voltage distribution allows efficient power delivery over smaller cables.

Pad-Mount Transformer Advantages:

  • Utility handles transformer costs and maintenance.
  • No need for medium-voltage equipment, training, or upkeep.
  • Lower equipment costs with smaller service sizes.
  • Reduced electrical footprint without medium-voltage gear.

A Critical Component of Power Distribution

Whether using a unit substation or a pad-mount transformer, both systems are essential for ensuring safe and efficient electrical distribution. Each option has its place, depending on the facility's size, complexity, and needs. At J&P Electrical, we support businesses by providing the products, expertise, and solutions needed to keep these systems operating at peak performance.

The Benefits of Refurbished Industrial Electrical Equipment

In the industrial world, every equipment decision can impact your bottom line. Purchasing refurbished industrial electrical parts is a cost-effective alternative to buying brand new machinery. With significant financial advantages, including cost savings, reduced depreciation, and better resale value, restored equipment offers great value. This blog will highlight the benefits and explain why J&P Electrical is the best choice for securing high-quality refurbished equipment at competitive prices.

Financial Advantages of Reconditioned Industrial Electrical Equipment

  1. Cost Savings: One of the most immediate benefits of purchasing refurbished industrial electrical equipment is the substantial cost savings. Reconditioned equipment is typically priced significantly lower than brand-new counterparts, offering businesses a chance to upgrade machinery without stretching their budgets. These savings can be used for other investments in your facility, helping improve your overall operations.
  2. Depreciation Rates: Another financial advantage is the depreciation rate of previously used equipment. New equipment depreciates quickly, often losing a large portion of its value within the first few years. Refurbished equipment, however, has already undergone its initial depreciation period. As a result, when you buy reconditioned, you’re often paying less upfront for equipment that has already taken the bulk of its depreciation hit. This can be particularly advantageous for businesses that intend to use the equipment for an extended period.
  3. Resale Value: Refurbished equipment also holds better resale value when compared to new machinery in many cases. Since refurbished equipment is priced lower, it often retains a higher percentage of its value relative to new equipment as it ages. If you decide to sell the equipment down the line, the lower initial cost means you’re likely to see a better return on your investment.
  4. High-Quality Standards: Reconditioned equipment is thoroughly inspected and restored to meet the necessary quality standards, ensuring it performs reliably. You’re often getting machinery that has been carefully repaired and tested to be as good as new, but at a fraction of the price.

Why Choose J&P Electrical for Refurbished Equipment?

At J&P Electrical, we understand the importance of getting quality equipment at the best possible price. That’s why we offer reconditioned industrial electrical equipment with several key advantages:

The Essential Role of Fire Alarms in Business Safety

Fire alarms are vital for any business, serving not just as a compliance requirement but as a critical safety mechanism to protect property, employees, and customers. Businesses are legally mandated to install and maintain fire alarm systems in accordance with specific standards and regulations, including regular testing and adherence to local fire safety codes.

Key Aspects of Fire Alarm Importance in Industrial and Commercial Settings:

  • Early Warning System:Fire alarms provide early alerts, enabling safe evacuation and potentially saving lives while minimizing property damage.
  • Compliance and Legal Obligations: An effective fire alarm system helps businesses meet safety regulations. Non-compliance can lead to severe legal and financial repercussions.

Maintenance is Critical

Regular maintenance of fire alarms is vital. It ensures that these systems function correctly and can deliver timely warnings during emergencies. Industry recommendations usually call for professional inspections at least annually to ensure all components are working properly. However, the frequency of fire alarm maintenance checks depends on factors such as the type of system, its installation environment, and local regulations. Certain systems—particularly those in high-risk settings like industrial facilities or commercial kitchens, often require more frequent checks.

Common Malfunctions and Troubleshooting

Fire alarms can fail due to sensor failures, power disruptions, or false alarms caused by dust. Timely troubleshooting of these problems involves checking power sources, examining the sensors for damage or blockages, and ensuring the control panel of the alarm system is functioning correctly to prevent and minimize hazards. Regular maintenance and testing are essential to identify and address potential issues before they escalate.

Reviving Nuclear Power: The Palisades Plant's Potential Comeback

The Palisades nuclear plant, located in Covert Township on the shores of Lake Michigan, is slated for a potential reopening in October 2025. This move could mark the first time in the U.S. that a nuclear facility is brought back online after initiating decommissioning. Supported by both federal and state funding, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the nation's nuclear power capacity as the U.S. strives to meet aggressive clean energy goals.

The push for reopening Palisades aligns with the Biden administration's ambitious plan to significantly expand the U.S. nuclear power capacity by 2050. This plan includes upgrading existing facilities and, notably, restarting operations at dormant plants. Palisades, with its 800-megawatt capacity, embodies the potential resurgence of nuclear power as a viable and sustainable energy source, particularly as the country prepares to meet the increasing demands from new infrastructures, like data centers.

Holtec International, the current owner of the Palisades plant, has begun the complex process of reviving the facility. This includes a comprehensive training program for future operators and substantial logistical and regulatory preparations. The training facility, once quiet, is now bustling with activity, indicating a robust effort towards bringing the plant back to operational status.

The decision to invest in reopening Palisades reflects a growing recognition of nuclear power's role in achieving clean energy standards. Michigan, along with other states, has set ambitious carbon neutrality goals, and nuclear energy is considered a key component in this strategy. This is underscored by state and federal financial backing, which includes funding from two Midwestern power companies committed to purchasing the energy generated from Palisades once it is operational.

However, the plant's potential reopening is not without controversy. Local residents and environmental groups have raised concerns about safety and the environmental impact, particularly given the plant's location on the shores of Lake Michigan. Despite these challenges, state and industry leaders argue that the benefits of nuclear energy—such as its reliability and zero carbon emissions—outweigh the potential risks.

As the debate continues, the revival of the Palisades plant stands as a significant case study in the broader discussion about the future of nuclear energy in America. With bipartisan support for nuclear power due to its clean and efficient nature, Michigan’s investment in Palisades could serve as a model for other states considering similar initiatives. This project not only represents a shift towards sustainable energy but also a potential economic boom through job creation and infrastructure development, demonstrating the complex interplay between environmental goals and economic realities in the push for a cleaner future.
