The IT Advice Everyone Ignores (Until Something Breaks—or Worse, You Get Hacked)

Everyone knows the basics of IT. Restart your computer. Don’t click suspicious links. Use strong passwords. None of this is new—and that’s exactly the problem.

These aren’t complex strategies or high-level security tactics. They’re simple habits. But in a busy workday, they’re easy to ignore, postpone, or assume someone else is handling. That’s when small oversights turn into real disruptions—or worse, security incidents.

Here’s a closer look at the IT advice everyone has heard… and why it still causes problems.

Restart Before You Panic -A slow computer. A frozen screen. Programs not responding. Most of the time, the fix is simple: restart your device. But instead, people keep working around the issue—opening more tabs, running more programs—until performance gets worse or something crashes entirely.

The reality: minor system issues build up over time. A quick reboot clears temporary processes and often resolves the problem immediately.

Stop—If You’re Stuck, Ask for Help -When something isn’t working, the instinct is often to “figure it out” or keep clicking until it does. That’s when small issues turn into bigger ones—misconfigured settings, lost data, or even security risks.

The reality: trying to fix an unfamiliar problem without the right knowledge can make things worse.

The better approach: pause and ask for help. Whether it’s your internal IT team or managed provider, getting the right support early can save time, prevent damage, and keep systems running smoothly.

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication - Passwords alone aren’t enough anymore. Cybercriminals are constantly finding ways to steal or guess login credentials. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a second layer of protection—something you have, not just something you know.

The risk: skipping MFA for convenience can leave critical systems exposed.

Hover Before You Click - Phishing emails are no longer obvious. They look legitimate, often mimic trusted brands, and create urgency to get you to act quickly. Taking a second to hover over a link can reveal whether it’s safe—or a trap.

The problem: in a fast-paced environment, people click first and think later.

Lock It Before You Leave It - Walking away from an unlocked computer may seem harmless—but it only takes seconds for sensitive information to be accessed or compromised.

The truth: physical security is just as important as digital security.

Keep Software Updated - Software updates aren’t just about new features—they fix security vulnerabilities. Ignoring updates creates openings for cyber threats.

The issue: updates get delayed because they feel inconvenient in the moment.

Back Up Your Data -Data loss doesn’t just happen to large companies. Hardware failures, accidental deletions, and ransomware attacks affect businesses of all sizes.

The risk: without reliable backups, recovery can be slow, expensive, or impossible.

Why Simple IT Best Practices Are Often Overlooked

Everyone has heard these tips before, and that’s exactly why they get ignored. They feel routine, easy, and not urgent. The real issue isn’t awareness—it’s consistency. It often comes down to good advice, but poor follow-through.

When businesses rely on individuals to remember and follow every best practice, things slip. Updates get postponed, shortcuts get taken, and small decisions get overlooked in the rush of a busy day. Those small gaps may seem harmless, but they’re exactly where problems begin, and where vulnerabilities grow.

How Managed IT Changes the Equation

Managed IT services remove the guesswork and inconsistency. Instead of relying on busy teams to:

  • Remember updates
  • Follow security protocols
  • Monitor systems
  • React and troubleshoot issues
  • Spend time coordinating with third-party vendors

You get:

  • 24/7 system and network monitoring
  • Server and workstation support
  • Enforced security measures, including managed antivirus
  • Security audits and proactive maintenance
  • Automated updates, backups, and disaster recovery
  • Employee troubleshooting and help desk support
  • Vendor coordination and fast issue resolution

It’s not about replacing good habits—it’s about ensuring they’re consistently supported and enforced across your organization. A proactive approach keeps your technology running smoothly while reducing risk and downtime.

What This Means for Your Business

Most IT problems aren’t caused by a lack of knowledge—they’re caused by small things being overlooked. Managed IT ensures those small things don’t turn into big problems. Because the best time to fix an issue isn’t after something breaks, or after you’ve been hacked, it’s before it ever happens.

What Are PCBs?

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of synthetic organic chemicals that were widely used in electrical and industrial applications for decades. Commonly found in transformers, capacitors, heat transfer systems, rail cars, and certain coatings, PCBs were valued for their stability, low flammability, and ability to effectively insulate and maintain electrical currents.

While these properties made PCBs highly useful, they also present serious environmental and health concerns. PCBs do not break down easily and can persist in the environment for long periods. Over time, exposure has been linked to a range of health risks, making their proper management critical.

PCBs were banned in the U.S. in 1979 under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Although production stopped, EPA regulations still allow small amounts to be unintentionally created during certain manufacturing processes. These inadvertently generated PCBs (iPCBs) are only permitted at specific concentration levels and must meet strict conditions, including reporting to the EPA and maintaining proper records.

In demolition and asset recovery projects, identifying and handling PCB-containing equipment is an essential step. This includes safely removing PCB oils, fluids, and contaminated components in accordance with strict environmental regulations. Proper disposal not only protects workers and surrounding communities but also ensures compliance with federal and state guidelines.

At J&P Electrical, our team is experienced in managing PCB-related materials during electrical teardowns and plant cleanouts. We prioritize safety, environmental responsibility, and regulatory compliance on every project—helping clients navigate complex requirements while minimizing risk.
